Big Ten Network Deal Close, Says Company President
(WEST LAFAYETTE) - The president of the Big Ten Network predicts a deal will be announced soon on expanded distribution of the channel.
Mark Silverman told a Purdue audience 40-percent of Indiana homes can receive the network via satellite or cable.
Silverman says talks continue, but negotiations take time. Silverman says the Big Ten Network should be part of the expanded basic cable channels. Comcast and other cable providers say all customers shouldn't have to pay for the channel. They want to offer it as part of a sports tier, at an added cost.
A Comcast spokesman says he's hopeful the two sides can reach an agreement beneficial to all cable customers.
Silverman says the network will begin working on more programs once the studios free up after basketball season. Silverman says the network also will carry shows which are not sports related, but showcase each of the Big Ten schools.
The network began airing last August.
