Indycar Qualifying Procedures Tweaked For 2008 Season
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Indycar Series will use a four-lap qualifying procedure similar to that used for the Indianapolis 500 at all oval tracks this season.
Starting positions on ovals will be determined by a four-lap average. The series previously used the fastest of two qualifying laps per car to determine the starting lineup on ovals.
The format includes one attempt per car at all ovals except Indianapolis with a blind draw continuing to be used to determine the qualifying order.
A four-lap qualifying run has been used at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway continuously since 1939 with a four-day "knockout" format being instituted in 2005.
The format for street and road courses, which was instituted in 2006, remains unchanged. The road course format consists of single-lap qualifying for all cars with the top six competing in a ten-minute group session to determine the pole winner.
The Indy Racing League also announced that the Indy Pro Series, the feeder to the Indycar Series, will use a two-lap cumulative format for qualifying.
The Indycar and Indy Pro seasons get underway on March 29th on the oval at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
