Indianapolis Aiming For 2012 Super Bowl Bid
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - New Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard announced Tuesday that the city will explore putting in a bid to host the Super Bowl in 2012.
The city will send a delegation to Phoenix this weekend to meet with league officials and to study how what that city is preparing for Sunday's game.
Ballard wants to review the league's requirements and make sure the corporate support is there before putting together a proposal. The review is expected to be completed by late February.
The city put together a proposal last year for the 2011 Super Bowl, but lost out to North Texas and the Dallas Cowboys' new 100-thousand-seat stadium.
The new Lucas Oil Stadium was the centerpiece of the Indianapolis proposal. The new stadium will seat 63,000 for Colts games but can be expanded to accommodate the NFL mandated 70,000 seats for a Super Bowl.
A bid would need to be submitted by April 1st. The league owners are expected to decide on the location for the 2012 Super Bowl at their meetings in May.
