Dungy To Make Announcement Monday
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy is expected to announce today whether he will honor the final year of his contract and coach the Colts for one more season or whether he will retire.
Dungy took the week following the Colts' 28-24 loss to San Diego in the divisional playoffs to discuss his future with his wife and Colts officials - a process he has gone through each of the past two seasons.
Dungy says he would like to remain as the Colts' head coach, but family obligations have made him question whether he can give the team his undivided attention.
Team owner Jim Irsay says he wants Dungy to remain as the team opens Lucas Oil Stadium this fall and is willing to give Dungy additional time off as well as use of Irsay's private jet so that Dungy could commute between Indianapolis and his family in Tampa, Florida.
Should Dungy decide to retire, Irsay and President Bill Polian have said that Assistant Head Coach Jim Caldwell would succeed Dungy. Caldwell has been Dungy's top assistant for seven seasons, the last six in Indianapolis.
Should Dungy decide to return for a final season, Caldwell would be expected to take over as head coach for the 2009 season.
