IU Releases Details Of Recruiting Infractions
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Indiana University made public on Tuesday the report the school sent to the NCAA committee on infractions regarding improper phone calls made by members of the men’s basketball program.
The report focuses on 111 phone calls that were made in excess of NCAA regulations or sanctions placed on Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and the men's basketball program. 101 of those improper calls were placed by former IU assistant Rob Senderoff, who resigned on Tuesday. Senderoff was also involved in nine improper three-way calls where he placed recruits in contact with Sampson.
Sampson's contact with potential recruits had been restricted by NCAA sanctions after Sampson and his assistants at the University of Oklahoma made improper phone calls to recruits. Those sanctions expired in late May.
The Indiana University Compliance Office discovered the latest rash of improper calls and hired the Indianapolis law firm of Ice Miller to investigate. After receiving the Ice Miller report, IU Athletic Director Rick Greenspan forwarded the report to the infractions committee and preemptively punished Sampson and Senderoff.
Sampson will not get a 500-thousand-dollar bonus he was scheduled to receive this season and had his salary frozen for next season. Senderoff had been forbidden from making off-campus recruiting trips and from contacting recruits via telephone. In addition, the men's basketball program will lose a scholarship for the 2008-09 season.
