(SOUTH BEND, IN) - Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis says freshman quarterback Jimmy Clausen will start this Saturday when the Fighting Irish travel to 15th-ranked Penn State.

Clausen played the final two series of last Saturday's 33-3 loss to Georgia Tech at Notre Dame Stadium, completing four of six passes for 34 yards with a sack.

Clausen was rated by many as the top high school recruit last year but his progress was slowed by a bone spur in his throwing elbow that required surgery.

Demetrius Jones started and was replaced by Evan Sharpley against the Yellow Jackets. Jones completed one of three passes for four yards while rushing twelve times for 28 yards. Four of the six drives he directed went three-and-out. Sharpley was ten-for-13 for 92 yards, but was sacked seven times.

Weis made the announcement at his weekly news conference. He said that he did not start Clausen because the freshman was still recovering from the arthroscopic surgery on his elbow.

Weis said that Clausen did not begin throwing without difficulty until last week.
