Hunter S. Thompson Told Jim Irsay To Draft Ryan Leaf Over Peyton Manning

Last updated on Friday, July 6, 2018

(SAN DIEGO, CA) - Former San Diego Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf shared a letter that late author Hunter S. Thompson penned to Colts owner Jim Irsay in 1998, encouraging Irsay to draft Leaf over Peyton Manning.

In the letter, Thompson said he would not provide Irsay a $30 million loan if the Colts selected Manning with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

"Leaf looks strong and Manning doesn't - or at least not strong enough to handle that 'Welcome to the NFL' business for two years without a world-class offensive line," Thompson said in the letter.

Manning led the Colts to a 141-67 record, 11 playoff appearances, two Super Bowls, a championship and eight seasons with at least 12 wins.

Leaf lasted only three seasons, throwing 14 touchdowns and 36 interceptions and is considered one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history.
