Ed Carpenter Wins Pole For Indianapolis 500

Last updated on Monday, May 21, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - For the third time in his career Indianapolis-native Ed Carpenter won the pole for the Indianapolis 500.

Carpenter finished with an average speed of 229.618 MPH over four laps, with his first lap clocking in at 230.088 MPH, the fastest of the weekend.

"That first lap blew my mind," he said. "It means everything for me to put us in position like this for next week," he added before saying that winning the pole is one thing, but winning the race is a whole different animal. "I don't want to just be considered a guy who wins the pole here."

In his previous 17 Indy 500 races, Carpenter has cracked the top five only once.

After Carpenter were Simon Pagenaud, Will Power, Josef Newgarden and Sebastian Bourdais. Danica Patrick will start at P7 in her final 500.

The other big story of the weekend was James Hinchcliffe failing to qualify for the race. There is speculation he could still find his way into the field of 33 but as of Sunday he said "at this point I believe I won't."
