(ORLANDO, FL) - NFL owners have tabled the so-called “Josh McDaniels rule” for the time being.
The rule, which would allow teams to hire assistant coaches as head coaches from other teams before concluding their playoff run has been put on the shelf until the May meeting.
Colts GM Chris Ballard was opposed to the rule change, despite being directly affected by it just a few months ago.
"When you're a playoff team, you're trying to eliminate all the distractions that you can. It becomes a slippery slope. We have rules in place for a reason. I think they're good rules. It gives you a chance to interview and then, after the season, whatever happens, happens. In our case, he changed his mind and we moved on."
Meanwhile, Colts GM Chris Ballard sat down with Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio on Tuesday and talked about everything from the fallout from the Josh McDaniels drama to the team deciding to trade the No. 3 overall pick in the draft to the New York Jets for the No. 6 overall pick and three second-round picks.
"We still believe there will be a premium player at six," he said.
In regards to the possibility of trading back even further in the draft Ballard said they haven't ruled it out.
"We'll have a discussion and decide 'is it worth it' if we move into the teens or into the twenties. Are we still going to get enough value back where it will help the team?"
