Last updated on Monday, March 12, 2018

(ST. PETERSBURG, FL) - Sebastian Bourdais opened up the INDYCAR season by winning the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg for the second consecutive season.

The 39-year old led 30 of the 110 laps and edged out Graham Rahal and Alexander Rossi, who finished second and third respectively.

"Obviously, when you win in front of friends and family, it's very special," the Frenchman said of his new adopted hometown in Florida. "I couldn't really be any happier about that."

Glory for Bourdais was heartbreak for Robert Wickens, who was the lap-leader with 69 as the 28-year old rookie was within two laps of winning before contact by Alexander Rossi sent Wickens into the barrier and caused him to finish in 18th place.

James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top five.

The next race on the Verizon INDYCAR Series schedule is the Phoenix Grand Prix on April 7.
