(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - So, that happened. About 10 hours after the Indianapolis Colts announced Josh McDaniels as their next head coach McDaniels changed his mind, turned down the job and will remain with the New England Patriots as offensive coordinator.
ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the story saying that Patriots owner Robert Kraft made a late push to keep McDaniels, apparently sweetening the pot enough to persuade him to spurn Indianapolis.
"After agreeing to contract terms to become the Indianapolis Colts' new head coach, New England Patriots assistant coach Josh McDaniels this evening informed us he would not be joining our team," the Colts said in a written statement. "Although we are surprised and disappointed, we will resume our head coaching search immediately and find the right fit to lead our team and organization on and off the field. The scheduled press conference at Lucas Oil Stadium will not take place tomorrow."
The stunning turn of events not only puts the Colts behind the eight-ball as far as head coaching candidates but the team has already hired assistant coaches and coordinators for McDaniels' staff. The team said the current coaching staff will be a non-issue in regards to hiring a new coach.
