Notre Dame Football Dismisses Max Redfield, Suspends Devin Butler Indefinitely

Last updated on Monday, August 22, 2016

(SOUTH BEND, IN) - After an out of control weekend that saw six Fighting Irish football players get arrested in two separate incidents Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly dismissed senior safety Max Redfield and suspended senior cornerback Devin Butler indefinitely.

The other four players involved, freshman receiver Kevin Stepherson, sophomore cornerback Ashton White, sophomore linerbacker Te'Von Coney and sophomore running back Dexter Williams will all be subject to internal disciplinary measures, according to Kelly.

"There are times when a player's conduct so clearly fails to meet the standards I have set for our football team that it is appropriate to take action independent of any decision that might be made by the Office of Community Standards. This is such an instance," Kelly said in a statement.

Redfield, Coney, Stepherson, White and Williams were all arrested on Friday after being stopped for speeding and were each charged with possession of marijuana while Butler was arrested in a separate incident Saturday morning at an off-campus bar on preliminary charges of battery and resisting arrest.
