Peyton Manning Retires From Football With Emotional Speech

Last updated on Tuesday, March 8, 2016

(DENVER, CO) - Peyton Manning gave an emotional goodbye to football, retiring from the NFL after 18 seasons.

Manning thanked everyone from friends, family, teammates, coaches, and opponents in his farewell address.

"There's just something about 18 years; 18 is a good number, and today I retire from pro football," a choked up Manning said.

The five-time league MVP thanked both Indianapolis and Denver for welcoming him with open arms over the years and reflected on all the fond memories that spanned his career.

"I revere football, I love the game. So, you don't have to wonder if I'll miss it. Absolutely, absolutely I will... there were players who were more talented, but there was no one who could out-prepare me."

Manning closed his near 13 minute speech with a reference to scripture, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith," he recited. "Well, I fought the good fight, I've finished my football race and after 18 years, it's time. God bless all of you and God bless football."

He signed off with one last "Omaha" before beginning his post-football life.
