Jim Nabors To Make Final Indy 500 Performance

Last updated on Wednesday, March 26, 2014

(HAWAII) - Jim Nabors will come back home to Indiana one more time.

Nabors had previously confirmed that he would continue his tradition of singing "Back Home Again In Indiana" prior to the Indianapolis 500 in May. But during an interview with MidWeek magazine in Hawaii, where he lives, Nabors, 83, said this year's 500 would be his last.

"They always give me a great reception," Nabors told the magazine in an article published March 19. The star of Gomer Pyle and co-star of the Andy Griffith Show first sang the song 42 years ago as a last-minute replacement for a singer who didn't show. He has sung it in person every year but two since 1987 - he missed 2007 due to health problems and sang via video from his Hawaii home in 2012 after having heart surgery.

Last year, prior to his return to Indianapolis, Nabors quietly married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader in Seattle. They have long run a macadamia nut farm that's part of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Maui.
