(Indianapolis, IN) - The Indianapolis Colts announced the signings of a pair of players on Monday.
The team has re-signed linebacker Justin Hickman and defensive end Fili Moala. Hickman was an exclusive rights free agent who missed all of the 2013 season after suffering a foot injury in a preseason game against Buffalo last August. The Colts originally signed Hickman as a free agent in February of 2012. Before then, Hickman spent three seasons playing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.
Moala was taken by the Colts in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of USC. He tied a career-high with 26 tackles in 2013.
The NFL free agent signing period gets underway at four o'clock Eastern Time this afternoon. Among the high-profile Indianapolis Colts who could go free this afternoon are cornerback Vontae Davis, safety Antoine Bethea and placekicker Adam Vinatieri.
There have been conflicting reports on the Davis front regarding the progress of negotiations, but both sides have expressed their desire to keep Davis in Indianapolis.
Vinatieri may get a chance to test the market once the signing period begins later today.
As for needs, the Colts reportedly are looking for help at wide receiver. Denver's Eric Decker and the New York Giants' Hakeem Nicks are rumored to be possibilities as Indianapolis looks for a receiver to compliment TY Hilton with Reggie Wayne recovering from a torn ACL.
The Colts are also looking for help along both the offensive and defensive lines. A definite area of need will be at center following the release of Samson Satele last week. Satele's primary backup last season, Mike McGlynn, becomes an unrestricted free agent this afternoon unless the Colts re-sign him, which is not expected to happen.
Nose tackle is also a concern with Josh Chapman the lone nose tackle on the roster. The defensive backfield will need some retooling depending on whether Davis and Bethea re-sign.
The Colts have already strengthened their linebacking corps, signing D'Qwell Jackson last week. Jackson had been cut by Cleveland and signed with the Colts after talking to Tennessee, Denver and Miami.
