(Charlotte, NC) - Tony Stewart says his broken right leg won’t be 100-percent, but he expects to be back in his stock car for next month’s season-opening Daytona 500.
The Columbus, Indiana native says the leg will only be about 65-percent healed when he gets back into the cockpit for Daytona Speedweeks.
He made his comments Monday during the annual NASCAR Media Tour in Charlotte.
Stewart suffered the injury in a sprint car crash in Iowa back on August fifth of last year. He still has a titanium rod in his leg which will provide the necessary strength to operate the pedals in his number-14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet.
The three-time Sprint Cup champion won't be cleared to drive until February 14th, the day before NASCAR's Sprint Unlimited exhibition race.
Stewart says he is still in pain and that he has lost so much weight during his recuperation that he had to get fitted for a new seat for his race car.
That new seat will include additional padding in the leg area to limit Stewart's discomfort.
