Last updated on Tuesday, September 24, 2013

(Milwaukee, WI) - The St. Louis Cardinals had a huge impact on the National League playoff race Monday night, with a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals.

The Cardinals win knocked the Nationals out of playoff contention, and put both the Reds and Pirates in the postseason.

Carlos Beltran's 24th homer of the season broke a 2-2 tie and put the Cards in front to stay.

St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright went 7 solid innings to grab his 18th win against 9 losses.

Rookie Tanner Roark took the loss for Washington, his first loss in 8 decisions.

The Cardinals still lead the N.L. Central division by 2 games over Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.
