Last updated on Friday, June 7, 2013

(St. Louis, MO) - In the National League Thursday, pitcher Shelby Miller homered for the first time in his major league career and pitched six solid innings during the St. Louis Cardinals’ 12-8 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Busch Stadium.

Miller joined Matt Carpenter in hitting back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning and improved to 7-3 on the year after limiting the Diamondbacks to two-runs while striking out nine.

Matt Holliday was the first of five Cardinals to homer on the night, a two-run shot in the first inning that tied the game at 2-2.

St. Louis improves to 39-21 and has a three game lead over the idle Cincinnati Reds for first place in the NL Central.

The Reds and Cardinals open a three-game series tonight at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. First pitch is at 7:10.
