(INDIANAPOLIS) - This year’s 33 drivers in the Indy 500 have a decision to make by the end of the day today—what kind of milk they want waiting for them if they win.
Fountain City dairy farmer Duane Hill will hand over the traditional bottle of milk to the race winner. It's his 11th year taking part in the ceremony.
The milk will be chilling in a cooler in Hill's hotel room before making its way to the track. Hill and Rushville dairy farmer Ken Hoeing will head for Victory Lane with about 20 laps to go, when it's relatively clear which drivers have a shot at the Borg-Warner Trophy.
Hill acknowledges they got caught off guard in 2011, when JR Hildebrand's final-turn crash produced a surprise victory for Dan Wheldon. Wheldon's preferred variety of milk was waiting anyway.
Drivers advise the American Dairy Association of Indiana ahead of time whether they want whole milk, two-percent or skim.
The drink that started the tradition, the buttermilk requested by Louis Meyer after he won the 500 in 1936, isn't among the options.
