Rizzo's Long Ball Powers Cubs To Opening Day Victory

(Pittsburgh, PA) - The Chicago Cubs opened the season with a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Jeff Samardzija was nearly flawless over his 8 innings pitched, allowing just 2 hits and striking out nine against the Pirates.

The Cubs jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on a 2-run homer by Anthony Rizzo and Welington Castillo provided an insurance run in the sixth inning with a double to right-center.

Carlos Marmol was pulled in the ninth after allowing the Pirates to score their first and only run of the game
