Cubs Nearly Blow Late Lead In Win Over Pirates

Last updated on Friday, April 5, 2013

(Pittsburgh, PA) - In the National League Thursday, the Chicago Cubs overcame another shaky ninth inning from Carlos Marmol to hold off the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

The Cubs had a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the ninth when Marmol nearly blew a save opportunity by allowing 2-runs on 3-hits and a walk.

The Cubs' closer was unsteady in allowing a run in the ninth-inning on opening day and has blown numerous save opportunities in the last two seasons.

Travis Wood allowed one hit and no runs over the course of his 6-innings pitched.

The Cubs are 2-1 on the season and begin a 3-game series tonight at the Atlanta Braves. First pitch is at 7:30.
