Patrick Wins Pole For Daytona 500

(Daytona, FL) - Danica Patrick became the first woman to ever capture pole position for a NASCAR top-flight race after qualifying first for the upcoming Daytona 500.

Patrick's speed of 196.434 miles-per-hour was the fastest during Sunday's qualifying session at the two and-a-half mile superspeedway, placing her on the front row next to former Pittsboro, Indiana resident, Jeff Gordon .

Patrick finished tenth in her first complete season on the Nationwide circuit in 2012. She is driving a full Sprint Cup schedule this year under the Stewart-Haas Racing banner, which is co-owned by Columbus, Indiana native, Tony Stewart.

The previous highest female qualifier for a cup race was Janet Guthrie, who started ninth at Bristol and Talladega in 1977.

The Daytona 500 is Sunday, February 24th, at 1:00.
