Last updated on Monday, February 25, 2013

(Daytona, FL) - Jimmie Johnson outdueled last season’s Sprint Cup Champion and later contained the field during the closing laps to win the Daytona 500 for the second time in his career.

Johnson nudged ahead of Brad Keselowski on lap 191 before debris in the second turn brought out the final yellow flag of the race.

Dale Earnhardt Jr made a late run at Johnson but fell short in finishing second at the two and-a-half mile tri-oval.

Mark Martin came in third, Keselowski fourth, and Ryan Newman of South Bend came in fifth.

Danica Patrick became the first woman to ever lead at the 500 when she passed Michael Waltrip on a lap-90 restart.

Patrick made history when she captured the pole at Daytona and later navigated her number 10 Chevrolet to an eighth place finish in Sunday's inaugural race of the Sprint Cup season.

Tony Stewart of Columbus, Indiana finished in 41st place after being engulfed in an early crash that also knocked out race favorite Kevin Harvick.

Jeff Gordon started second and led a total of 31 laps before finishing in a disappointing 20th place.

Greg Biffle came in sixth and Regan Smith was seventh.

Michael McDowell finished behind Patrick in ninth position and JJ Yeley was tenth.

The Sprint Cup Season resumes at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday.
