Last updated on Wednesday, January 16, 2013

(New York, NY) - The Saint John’s Red Storm handed the twentieth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish their second consecutive loss with a 67-63 stunner at Madison Square Garden.

The Red Storm entered last night's contest as the nation's best team in blocked shots and recorded nine blocks against Fighting Irish, including two in the final twenty seconds.

Notre Dame was able to overcome a 12 point deficit in the second half, but Saint John's scored the final six points of the game in notching their third straight win over their Big-East rivals.

Eric Atkins led all scorers with 21 points and Jerian Grant added 14 for Notre Dame. Atkins tallied six steals on the evening, a defensive effort that was negated by Grant's six turnovers.

Jakaar Sampson led the Red Storm with 17 points and Phil Green-the-fourth had 13 for Saint John's, who are 10-7 overall, 2-3 in the Big East with a Saturday matchup at the DePaul Blue Demons.

Notre Dame falls to 14-3 overall, 2-2 in the conference and host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Purcell Pavilion Saturday.
