Notre Dame Lineback Te'o Victim Of Hoax

Last updated on Thursday, January 17, 2013

(South Bend, IN) - Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said in a news conference yesterday that linebacker Manti te’o was a victim of an online conspiracy the duped the Heisman finalist into believing his fictitious internet girlfriend had died of Leukemia.

Swarbrick said a woman using a false name and identity "integrated herself" with Te'o, then conspired with others to deceive him into believing his girlfriend passed away in September.

Swarbrick said Te'o had never met his alleged girlfriend and that the relationship was "exclusively online."

Deadspin.com reported yesterday that no record of his alleged girlfriend is in existence, including a death certificate.
