(Miami, FL) - Two of the nation’s best defenses are featured tonight when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Alabama Crimson Tide play in the BCS National Championship game at Sun Life Stadium in Miami.
The Crimson Tide defense is second only to Notre Dame in points allowed and have given up the fewest yards per game in the nation.
The Fighting Irish are first in the nation in points allowed and have given up just ten touchdowns this season, again the lowest in the nation.
The Crimson Tide finished the season by beating the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC title game and stormed back to their current number-two national ranking after losing to the Texas A&M Aggies on November 10th.
Alabama won the national title last year by defeating the LSU Tigers 21-0 in the BCS title game, their second championship in three years.
Notre Dame is undefeated for the first time since 1988, the same year the Fighting Irish last claimed a national title, and finished 12-0 in 2012 after beating the Southern California Trojans 22-13 on November 24th.
The two iconic programs have met only a handful number of times and didn't play each other until Notre dame beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl in 1973.
The Fighting Irish won the last meeting between the two schools in 1987, a 37-6 win over the Crimson Tide in South Bend, and lead the all-time series 5-1 over Alabama.
