(West Lafayette, IN) The Purdue Boilermakers introduced Darrell Hazel as their new football coach during a news conference Wednesday morning.
Hazel leaves the head coaching position at Kent State University and will make 12-million dollars over the life of his six year contract.
Hazel had a base salary of three-hundred thousand dollars with the Golden Flashes and will make over a million dollars more annually than his predecessor, Danny Hope.
Athletic Director Morgan Burke said yesterday that he believes the change at the head coaching position gives the Boilermakers their best chance of returning to the Rose Bowl.
Hope was fired after four years with the program and at the conclusion of a disappointing 6-and-6 regular season.
Purdue will take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on January 1st.
Hazel was 16-9 in two seasons with Kent State and was named Mid-American-Conference Coach of the Year before losing the MAC championship game to Northern Illinois last weekend.
He is the first African-American to coach at the university and the fourth in the history of the Big-Ten.
