(St. Louis, MO) - Former Ball State Head Basketball Coach Rick Majerus died Saturday of heart failure at a Los Angeles Hospital.
Majerus had been hospitalized for several months after taking a leave of absence from his current position as head coach of the St. Louis Billikins, and leaves behind a legacy of one losing season in his 25 years as a head coach.
Majerus spent 15 seasons with the Marquette Golden Eagles, 3 as head coach, and one season as an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks before making his way to Muncie.
He won a Mid-American Conference Title and a MAC tournament championship during his two year tenure with the Cardinals.
He left Ball State for the Utah Utes and coached the team to the NCAA Championship game in 1998 while compiling ten conference championships in 15 seasons.
Poor health was a reoccurring issue for Majerus over his 25 year career and forced him to abandon a coaching position at the University of Southern California before his inaugural season in 2005.
He was hired by St. Louis in 2007 and helped the Billikins end a twelve year NCAA tournament drought last year before leaving the position in August.
Majerus, 64, is survived by two sisters, Jodi and Tracy.
