Colts Head Coach Pagano Battling Leukemia

Last updated on Tuesday, October 2, 2012

(Indianapolis, IN) - Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Chuck Pagano is battling a form of treatable leukemia and has undergone chemotherapy since last Wednesday.

The team made the announcement yesterday at a news conference and revealed that Pagano will undergo a long and rigorous treatment program, including an initial four to six week hospital stay.

Dr. Larry Cripe called the recovery process "long and complicated," but was optimistic that Pagano would make a full recovery.

Colts owner Jim Irsay was also optimistic that his first year coach would make a full recovery, but conceded that ongoing treatment would prevent Pagano from returning to the Colts in a full time capacity this season.

Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, a survivor of prostate cancer, has been named interim head coach during his boss's absence.

Pagano was hospitalized since Wednesday after experiencing fatigue and irregular bruising.

According to the American Cancer Society, early treatment of this form of leukemia brings remission in eighty to ninety percent of patients.
