Phillips Homers As Reds Hand Pirates Their Fifth Straight Loss

Last updated on Wednesday, September 12, 2012

(Cincinnati, OH) - Brandon Phillips homered and drove in two runs to lead the Cincinnati Reds past the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3.

Pittsburgh's Alex Presley and Phillips traded solo home runs in the first inning with Phillips giving Cincinnati a 2-1 lead with an RBI double in the second.

Later in the second, the Reds made it 4-2 when Cincinnati pitcher Mike Leake scored from third on a wild pitch from Pittsburgh starter Kevin Correia.

Catcher Mike McKenry's throw to Correia covering the plate hit Leake, allowing Phillips to score on the error.

Gaby Sanchez hit a two-run homer in the seventh to bring the Pirates to within a run at 4-3, but Scott Rolen's solo shot in the eighth gave the Reds an insurance run.

Leake improves to 8-9 while Correia falls to 10-9 as the Pirates have lost five straight.
