Notre Dame Heading To The Atlantic Coast Conference

Last updated on Thursday, September 13, 2012

(South Bend, IN) - Notre Dame will leave the Big East and join the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports except football and hockey.

The ACC announced the move on Wednesday. The Fighting Irish will make the move as soon as they can exit the Big East.

The Big East requires members to give the conference 27 months notice before leaving, but Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia were able to speed up the process by paying higher exit fees.

The Notre Dame Football team will remain an independent, but will play five games per year against ACC teams.

The ACC does not offer hockey, so the Irish are expected to join the Hockey East Association.
