Pirates Outlast Cardinals In MLB's Longest Game This Season

(St. Louis, MO) - Pedro Alvarez hit a go-ahead solo homer and Andrew McCutchen added a two-run single in Pittsburgh’s three-run top of the 19th inning as the Pirates got past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3.

Carlos Beltran gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with a two-run double in the fourth, but the Pirates tied the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Josh Harrison and an infield single from McCutchen.

That was all of the scoring until the 17th when Garrett Jones put the Pirates ahead 3-2 with an RBI single, but St. Louis tied it on Tony Cruz' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

Barret Browning came in to pitch the 19th for the Cardinals and retired Mike McKenry before giving up Alvarez' shot.

Wandy Rodriguez pitched two innings for the Pirates to get the win. With the victory,

Pittsburgh stays six and-a-half games behind the first-place Reds in the NL Central while the Cardinals fall eight and-a-half games behind Cincinnati.
