Gordon Picks Up First Win Of Season At Soggy Pocono Raceway

Last updated on Monday, August 6, 2012

(Long Pond, PA) - Jeff Gordon took the lead just before the rains hit to win the weather-shortened NASCAR Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono Raceway.

With the bad weather rolling in, Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson battled for the lead on a restart and spun.

Gordon took the lead in the melee.

As the track was being cleaned up, a severe thunderstorm hit and the race was called with 98 of the scheduled 160 laps complete.

The win is the first of the season for the former Pittsboro, Indiana resident who needed a victory to get into contention for one of the two wild card spots for the upcoming Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Dale Earnhardt Junior maintains the points lead with Kenseth just four points behind. Gordon ties South Bend's Ryan Newman for the second of the two wild card berths.
