(Indianapolis, IN) - Sunday was an off day for the Indianapolis Colts players, but the front office was busy completing a trade for Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis.
The 24-year-old Davis is entering his fourth N-F-L season after being selected by the Dolphins with the 25th-overall pick in the 2009 draft.
Davis became expendable in Miami when he was supplanted in the starting lineup by free agent acquisition Richard Marshall.
In return for Davis, the Colts send their second-round draft pick and a conditional late-round pick in 2013. The Colts suffered a pair of major injuries during Saturday afternoon's preseason loss at Washington.
Starting nose tackle Brandon McKinney tore the ACL in his left knee against the Redskins and is probably out for the season. X-rays on the foot of rookie wide receiver Griff Whalen show a fracture.
Head coach Chuck Pagano says Whalen will miss extended time. The former Stanford standout caught eight passes for 66 yards against Washington.
Pagano says injuries to linebacker Robert Mathis and cornerback Jarraud Powers are not serious and both are expected to be ready for the regular season opener September ninth in Chicago.
The Colts need to trim the roster from 90 players to 75 by four o'clock Eastern Time this afternoon.
They got a head start on Sunday, announcing the release of eleven players. The most notable of the players cut is cornerback Chris Rucker, who was a sixth-round draft pick of the Colts last season.
Also waived yesterday were cornerbacks Cameron Chism, Antonio Fenelus and Terrence Johnson, safeties Matt Merletti and David Caldwell, linebacker Mike Balogun, wide receiver Quan Cosby, running back Alvester Alexander, guard Jason Foster and punter Brian Stahovich.
With the addition of Davis, the Colts' roster currently stands at 80 players. The final cutdown to 53 players must be made by this Friday night.
