Burnett Throws Gem As Pirates Beat Red Hot Cincinnati

Last updated on Monday, August 6, 2012

(Cincinnati, OH) - AJ Burnett came within an out of a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates avoided being swept in Cincinnati with a 6-2 win over the Reds.

Jay Bruce gave the Reds a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first but Neil Walker responded in the second with a two-run home run off Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey.

Drew Stubbs hit a solo shot of Burnett in the third to tie the game, but rookie Starling Marte put Pittsburgh ahead to stay with a two-run triple in the fourth.

The Pirates added three insurance runs in the ninth, including a solo homer by Andrew McCutchen, as they snap the Reds' five-game winning streak.

Burnett went eight and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts to improve to 14-3.

Bailey falls to 9-7 as Cincinnati's lead over Pittsburgh is down to four and a half games in the NL Central.
