BNL Unveils New Weight Room

Last updated on Wednesday, July 18, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Last week the Bedford North Lawrence High School got a new weight room.

Jeff Bartlett of the Times-Mail reports that the athletic department made substantial renovations to the weight training facility, with brighter, BNL colors painted on the walls, and new racks and machines to hold the thousands of pounds of weights designed to build the strength and speed necessary to help all teams better compete at 5A and 4A levels. BNL athletic director Jeff Callahan says it will help all athletes get better and be able to compete.

In the early days of BNL the weight room was located in a basement corner next to the swimming pool. Athletes had to compete in a sweaty squalor next to the steamy pool, where condensation ran down the walls.

Then in the room was moved up to the main floor of the gym It was upgraded in the 1980s under the direction of former football coach Marc Anderson who got the Stars involved in weight-lifting competitions.

BNL football coach Bret Szabo says now it's up to the kids to make the commitment to put it to full use.

BNL girls basketball coach Kurt Godlevske, cites extended weight training as one of the reasons his girls broke a 15-year sectional championship drought last season.

"If kids don't get in there and get after it they're going to fall behind," Godlevske says. "Just like a classroom in school, you need to make the place appealing and keep it up to date if you want them to come in there and put it to good use.

Weights are obviously important in so-called muscle sports like football and wrestling, but the wide variety of leg, back, shoulder, arm and chest machines now available will benefit everything from swimming to soccer and track and field. There are machines to also emphasize stretching and flexibility as well as power and explosiveness.
