Mike Brey Gets Contract Extension

Last updated on Tuesday, June 19, 2012

(South Bend, IN) - Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey reportedly has agreed to a ten-year contract extension.

Brey and Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick will discuss the extension at a news conference on campus this morning.

Brey is a three-time Big East coach of the year and was named national coach of the year in 2011.

53-year-old Brey has been head coach of the Fighting Irish since July of 2000. He has led Notre Dame to six-straight 20-win seasons. He may have done his best coaching job during the 2011-12 campaign.

The team's leading returning scorer, forward Tim Abromaitis, was suspended for the first four games of the season and then lost for the year when he tore an ACL during a practice in November. After struggling early, the Irish got hot in conference play and handed number-one Syracuse its first loss of the season to start a nine-game winning streak.

Notre Dame finished 22-and-12, 13-and-5 in the Big East and reaching the semifinals of the conference tournament before losing to Louisville. The Irish reached the NCAA Tournament, losing to Xavier in their opener.
