Larry Bird Leaving Pacers

Last updated on Tuesday, June 26, 2012

(Indianapolis, IN) - Larry Bird is stepping down as president of basketball operations of the Indiana Pacers, according to a published report.

The Indianapolis Star, citing a person with direct knowledge of the situation, says Bird is "100-percent sure" he will not return. Bird is expected to meet with team owner Herb Simon today to finalize his plans.

The Star reports that Bird is dealing with health issues and is expected to take a year off before deciding if he wants to return to basketball.

The former three-time NBA Most Valuable Player has worked in the Pacers front office since 2003 and replaced Donnie Walsh as the head of basketball operations in 2008.

Walsh is expected to return to the franchise and could replace Bird as president of basketball operations.

The report states that current director of player personnel Kevin Pritchard will likely become the Pacers' new general manager and that current GM David Morway is no longer employed by the team.
