(INDIANAPOLIS) - For the third time in five days of practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, rookie Josef Newgarden turned in the fast lap of the day.
Newgarden's lap of 222.785 miles per hour was good enough to top the speed chart on Wednesday.
Newgarden also became the first driver to make wall contact. With 16 minutes remaining in the practice session, the 21-year-old driver for Sarah Fisher Hartman racing did two complete spins exiting Turn 4 and made light contact with the pit lane retaining wall. Newgarden was not hurt and says the car is fine.
Andretti Autosport teammates Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe make up positions two through four on Wednesday's speed chart with Dario Franchitti fifth quick.
Rookie Katherine Legge will make her IMS debut this morning as she begins Rookie Orientation. Legge and Dragon Racing teammate Sebastien Bourdais have been in limbo after team owner Jay Penske filed a lawsuit against Lotus. Penske is trying to get out of the team's contract with Lotus and there has been no word as to how the legal issues with the engine supplier will be worked out.
Legge has not raced on an oval since she finished sixth in a Champ Car World Series race at the Milwaukee Mile in 2006. IndyCar officials are trying to get Legge's rookie test out of the way today with a crowd expected on the oval for tomorrow's "Fast Friday" session.
