Butler To Join A10 Conference This Fall

Last updated on Wednesday, May 30, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Butler will jump from the Horizon League to the Atlantic 10 a year early.

The university announced earlier this month that it would be leaving the Indianapolis-based Horizon League for the A10 for the 2013-14 school year. Now, Butler will compete in the A10 this fall.

Athletic director Barry Collier issued a statement saying that after discussing terms for Butler to participate in the Horizon League for the upcoming season, the university decided it was in its best interest to reach agreement for an immediate departure.

The Indianapolis Star reported on its website Tuesday that some Horizon League school presidents were seeking to make Butler ineligible for all league tournaments in 2012-13.

Horizon Commissioner Jon LeCrone issued a statement says that the league and Butler agreed not to discuss details of the split. The Butler logo was removed from the Horizon League website within minutes of the announcement.

Seventeen varsity teams will make the transition while the football team will remain in the Pioneer League.

The Atlantic 10 will consist of 16 schools for the 2012-13 school year with Virginia Commonwealth also beginning play this fall after moving from the Colonial Athletic Association. Among those 16 universities is Temple, which will leave the A10 for the Big East in the fall of 2013.
