(MIAMI, FL) - The defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals open the baseball season tonight in Miami as they take on the Marlins.
The Cardinals are adjusting to life without Albert Pujols and Tony La Russa. Pujols signed a ten-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels over the winter after putting up Hall-of-Fame-worthy numbers in eleven seasons in St. Louis. La Russa retired following the Cardinals' World Series win over the Texas Rangers with Mike Matheny taking over the team as the new manager.
The re-christened "Miami" Marlins are opening their new ballpark tonight. Marlins Park is not the only change as Miami has added former Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and All-Stars Jose Reyes, Heath Bell and Mark Buehrle to their roster.
Josh Johnson will start tonight for the Marlins with Kyle Lohse getting the call for St. Louis. Johnson is Miami's ace, but he is coming off an injury-plagued 2011. He made just nine starts last year, going 3-and-1.
Lohse gets the start in place of Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter, who is expected to miss all of April with nerve irritation in his pitching shoulder. Lohse did record a team-high 14 wins last season.
