Former IU Coach Gets First Head Coach Gig

Last updated on Friday, April 6, 2012

(HOMEWOOD, AL) - Bennie Seltzer was introduced as the new head men’s basketball coach at Samford University on Thursday.

Seltzer came with Tom Crean to Indiana University from Marquette in 2008. He also served as an assistant at Oklahoma under Kelvin Sampson.

The job at Samford is Seltzer's first as a head coach.

The Bulldogs play in the Southern Conference and the University is located just outside of Seltzer's hometown of Birmingham, Alabama.

Seltzer was heavily involved in recruiting players at Indiana, including luring Christian Watford to the Hoosiers out of Alabama.

Speculation as to who will replace Seltzer on IU's bench has focused on Calbert Cheaney. Cheaney returned to the Hoosiers last season as director of basketball operations following a playing career that saw him become the leading scorer in IU history followed by a 13-year career in the NBA.
