Former Colts And Notre Dame QB Found Dead

(COLUMBUS) - Former Indianapolis Colts and Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel was found dead at a relative’s home in Columbus on Sunday. He was 50 years old.

Bartholomew County coronor Allen Smith tells the Chicago Tribune that Kiel died of natural causes, although Smith said he could not confirm one report that he died of a heart attack.

Smith says an autopsy has been performed and that officials are awaiting the results of tissue and toxicoligy tests.

A native of Columbus, Kiel played at Columbus East High School, leading the Olympians to the Class 3A state championship in 1979. He signed on to play collegiality at Notre Dame, quarterbacking the Fighting Irish from 1980 through 1983. Kiel currently ranks tenth in career passing yards and eighth in career completions at Notre Dame.

He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1984 and played seven games for the Indianapolis Colts during the 1986 and 1987 seasons. He finished his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers.

He was the uncle of Notre Dame freshman quarterback Gunner Kiel.
