Colts To Select Luck As Number One Pick

Last updated on Friday, April 20, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indianapolis Colts have notified Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck that he will be the first overall selection in Thursday’s first round of the NFL draft.

ESPN, citing an unnamed league source, first reported the Colts had notified Luck of the decision yesterday morning. Other media outlets, including The Indianapolis Star, have since confirmed the ESPN report.

Luck has long been believed to be the Colts' target, but Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III was also under consideration for the top pick.

General manager Ryan Grigson said on Wednesday that the Colts knew which quarterback they would take next week, but did not reveal who the selection would be.

The Horseshoes struggled at quarterback en route to a 2-and-14 record last season as four-time league MVP Peyton Manning was shelved for the entire 2011 campaign following neck surgery. Manning was released by the Colts last month and has since signed with the Denver Broncos.

Manning's fill-ins from last season - Dan Orlovsky, Curtis Painter and Kerry Collins - have since left Indianapolis. Painter was signed by the Baltimore Ravens yesterday. Orlovsky signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last month and Collins went back into retirement.
