(DAYTONA BEACH, FL) - Matt Kenseth edged Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win Monday night’s rain-delayed Daytona 500.
An eight-car accident with two laps remaining set up a green-white-checkered finish with Kenseth holding off Earnhardt and teammate Greg Biffle to earn his second Daytona 500 victory.
It marked the first time in the 54-year history of the event that NASCAR was unable to complete the race on its scheduled day.
The race was originally rescheduled to start at Noon Eastern Time on Monday, but weather pushed the start back to seven o'clock in the evening.
The race got off to a bumpy start with a six-car accident on lap two that took five-time Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson out of the race while taking defending Daytona 500 Champion Trevor Bayne, Danica Patrick and Kurt Busch out of contention.
Later, the race was stopped for more than two hours when Juan Pablo Montoya lost control of his car and crashed into a jet dryer, causing a large fire in turn three.
Nobody was hurt in the incident.
Something apparently broke on Montoya's car as he lost control and slammed the trailer hauling the jet dryer while coming out of the pits during a caution period.
