Colts Name Defensive Minded Pagano As New Head Coach

Last updated on Thursday, January 26, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Chuck Pagano is the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts will introduce the 51-year-old Pagano as the new coach at a news conference this afternoon.

A career assistant, Pagano was named Defensive Coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens in 2011 after spending three years coaching the Ravens' defensive backs.

He has been an NFL assistant for the Oakland Raiders and the Cleveland Browns as well as serving as a College Assistant at Miami and North Carolina.

Pagano interviewed with the Colts on Tuesday, two days after the Ravens were eliminated by New England in the AFC championship game.

Pagano's Baltimore defense ranked third in points allowed in 2011.

He replaces Jim Caldwell as Colts Head Coach.

Caldwell went to the Super Bowl his first season, the playoffs his second and was fired after going 2-14 in his third season.

Pagano emerged from a crowded field of candidates that included former Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel, New Orleans Saints Offensive Coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr., Tennessee Titans Defensive Coordinator Jerry Gray, Montreal Alouettes Head Coach Marc Trestman and San Francisco 49ers Special Teams Coach Brad Seely.
