(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Indianapolis Colts Vice Chairman Bill Polian said on his Monday night radio show that it was time to reassess what the team is doing and adjust.
The Colts made a pair of adjustments on Tuesday, firing Defensive Coordinator Larry Coyer and naming Dan Orlovsky as the starting quarterback for Sunday's game with the New England Patriots.
Coyer over saw a defense that ranked last in the NFL in points allowed, 29th in total yards and 31st in rushing yards. He will be replaced by Linebackers Coach Mike Murphy.
Orlovsky replaces Curtis Painter at quarterback. Painter has gone 0-8 since replacing the injured Kerry Collins as the starter.
Orlovsky is 0-7 as a starter in his NFL career. The Colts return to the practice field this afternoon as they begin preparing for Sunday afternoon's game with Patriots at Foxborough.
The Colts are 0-11 and are off to the second-worst start in franchise history. The 1986 Colts began 0-13 before winning their final three games of that season.
The Patriots are 8-3 and are coming off a big road win in Philadelphia. New England has won its last three games and holds a two-game lead over the second-place jets in the AFC East. The Colts announced a series of roster moves yesterday.
The Colts have signed linebacker Scott Lutrus off the St. Louis Rams' practice squad. Lutrus is a rookie out of Connecticut who has yet to play in a regular season game.
They also signed quarterback Jarrett Brown to the practice squad. Brown passed for nearly 3,000 yards and ran for 1,100 more in 38 games at West Virginia.
The Colts released tight end Mike McNeill and placed defensive back Stevie Brown on injured reserve while the Jacksonville Jaguars signed quarterback Dan LeFevour off the Colts' practice squad.
