(CHICAGO, IL) - Theo Epstein is close to becoming the head of the Chicago Cubs, according to a published report.

The Boston Herald reports that Epstein is close to leaving his job as the Red Sox' general manager to accept a position with the Cubs that is believed to include powers greater than those he has in Boston.

An announcement is expected in the next couple of days, according to the report.

One sticking point is compensation as the Red Sox are going to want a player, money, or a combination of the two to release Epstein from his contract.

Epstein has been GM since 2002, leading the Red Sox to a pair of World Series Championships.

Boston's 2004 title halted an 86-year World Series drought for the Red Sox.

The Cubs have not won the World Series since 1908.
