IndyCar Championship Celebration Cancelled Following Wheldon's Death

Last updated on Tuesday, October 18, 2011

(LAS VEGAS, NV) - IndyCar cancelled Monday night’s scheduled championship celebration out of respect for Dan Wheldon.

Wheldon, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, was killed in a 15-car crash at Sunday's season-ending race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The Clark County, Nevada medical examiner's office released an autopsy report on Monday saying Wheldon died from blunt head trauma.

The championship celebration was scheduled to take place at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.

A release issued by IndyCar says information regarding a public memorial for Wheldon will be released at a later date.

Drivers Pippa Mann and JR Hildebrand were released from a Las Vegas Hospital on Monday.

Mann suffered severe burns to the small finger of her right hand and Hildebrand suffered a bruised sternum in the same accident that killed Wheldon.

Mann underwent surgery on Sunday night to clean the wound and assess the injury.

She will undergo further surgery in the next two or three weeks to fully repair the injury.

Driver Will Power was also hospitalized following the 15-car crash and was released from University Medical Center on Sunday night.
