Collins Named Starter For Colts Season Opener

Last updated on Wednesday, September 7, 2011

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Indianapolis Colts begin preparing for Sunday’s regular season opener with Houston Texans when they return to practice today.

Much of the news surrounding the team this offseason has involved the health of quarterback Peyton Manning.

Manning is not expected to play in Houston on Sunday as he continues to recover from neck surgery in May.

Seventeen-year veteran Kerry Collins will start for the Colts on Sunday.

Collins was signed on August 24th in case Manning would not be healed in time for the regular season.

The Colts removed running back Chad Spann from injured reserve on Monday, making the Indianapolis native a free agent.

Spann, a rookie out of Northern Illinois, made the Colts' 53-man roster following the preseason, but was placed on the waived-injured list Sunday when the team claimed fullback Chris Gronkowski off waivers from Dallas.

Spann had eight carries for 31 yards and a 25-yard pass reception during the preseason.
